Seal marks are part of the visual language of Yixing teapots. They may appear on the base, inside the lid, under the handle or near the spout. A teapot may show one or several marks depending on the maker, workshop and style. The bottom seal is the most visible in listings, but lid and handle marks can also matter. A good product page should show these areas clearly when they are relevant to the pot.
What a seal can and cannot prove
A seal can record a name, studio or decorative identity. It can help compare one pot with another and may support provenance when paired with reliable documentation. It cannot prove clay quality, age, full handmade construction or market value on its own. Stamps can be copied, misread or used loosely.
How to examine seal photos
Look for sharp, readable close photos. Compare the seal with the rest of the product record: title, clay category, shape, capacity, craft note and price. If a listing depends heavily on a famous name but shows a poor seal image, the evidence is weak.
When to request documentation
For high-value pieces, ask for additional photos, a certificate if one exists, and clear written records. For ordinary functional pots, the seal is still useful, but it should not override practical details such as fit, pour and condition.
