Handmade Duozhi Yixing Zisha Teapot – Shihong Clay, 150ml
This is a 150 ml duozhi teapot in Shihong Clay, fully handmade, made in Dingshu, Yixing. Its Chinese name is 掇只.
The clay. A red clay carrying stone-yellow ore, firing to a warm brick tone. Stable and even-handed; a straightforward everyday body.
The form. The Duozhi form (掇只) dates to the Qing dynasty, attributed to Shao Daheng. Shao Daheng's most famous form, and one of the most copied objects in the whole craft. The name refers to stacking — body, shoulder and lid read as one continuous swelling curve. Heavy, full and completely unornamented. The pot other plain forms get measured against.
How it was made. Built entirely by hand — the wall is beaten out from a slab and joined without a mould. Inside the body you can still read the tool marks and the joint line, which is how the method is verified.
Size and tea. 150 ml serves two to three people from a single fill, which makes it the most generally useful size on a tea table. Best suited to black tea and roasted oolong.
This pot. Catalogue no. 129, 150 ml, US$85. Photographed individually — the images show the pot you receive.
Made by 范卫兵. We buy directly from the workshop rather than through a wholesaler, so the attribution comes with the pot.
