Handmade Qinquan Yixing Zisha Teapot – Shihuang Clay, 180ml
This is a 180 ml qinquan teapot in Shihuang Clay, fully handmade, made in Dingshu, Yixing. Its Chinese name is 秦权.
The clay. A naturally occurring, very high-iron yellow stone clay. Normally used to adjust the colour of zhuni and hongni; used on its own it is uncommon. Warm and bright in the hand, with a fine grain.
The form. The Qinquan form (秦权) dates to the Qing dynasty. Modelled on a Qin-dynasty weight — the standard that came with the unification of measures. A weight is an instrument of fairness, and the form carries that idea. Solid and low-centred, with a high arched handle. Long favoured by literati for what it stands for.
How it was made. Built entirely by hand — the wall is beaten out from a slab and joined without a mould. Inside the body you can still read the tool marks and the joint line, which is how the method is verified.
Size and tea. At 180 ml this fills three or four cups at once — enough for guests without moving to a full teapot. Best suited to black tea and roasted oolong.
