Pear-Shaped Yixing Zisha Teapot – Reduction-Fired Zhuni Clay, 90ml
This is a 90 ml pear-shaped teapot in Reduction-Fired Zhuni Clay, gold-leaf decorated, made in Dingshu, Yixing. Its Chinese name is 梨仕.
The clay. Zhuni fired in a reduction atmosphere — oxygen is limited late in the firing, which pulls the iron toward darker, cooler tones instead of bright red. Same dense zhuni body, an entirely different surface. Each firing comes out slightly different, so no two are quite alike.
The form. The Pear-Shaped form (梨形) dates to the late Ming to early Qing, attributed to the Mengchen lineage. A classic small zhuni form: narrow above, full below, like a ripe pear hanging on the branch, with a high neck and short spout. Related to sitting, wendan and xishi, but with more of the weight of real fruit low in the body.
How it was made. Gold leaf applied over the fired body.
Size and tea. At 90 ml this is a solo pot. One person, short infusions, and the small volume means you can push a good leaf through eight or ten steeps without ever brewing more than you drink. Best suited to oolong, yancha and black tea.
This pot. Catalogue no. 047, 90 ml, US$101. Photographed individually — the images show the pot you receive.
Made by 陈敬. We buy directly from the workshop rather than through a wholesaler, so the attribution comes with the pot.
