A gaiwan and a Yixing teapot can both work for gongfu tea, but they solve different problems. A gaiwan is neutral, easy to rinse and useful for testing many teas. A Yixing teapot is more specialized, tactile and often chosen for repeated use with a narrower tea family.
Choose a gaiwan when you need neutrality
A porcelain gaiwan is easy to clean and does not hold tea aroma the same way unglazed clay can. It is a good tool for comparing new teas, testing samples and learning brew parameters. If you do not yet know which tea family you drink most, a gaiwan is often the safer first tool.
Choose Yixing when you want specialization
An unglazed Yixing teapot is often chosen when you brew one tea family regularly. The pot’s size, clay record, shape and pour become part of the routine. Because zisha can retain traces of use, many drinkers avoid switching a frequently used pot between strongly different teas.
Handling and heat
A gaiwan gives direct control but requires finger technique. A Yixing teapot gives a handle and spout, which can feel easier, but it also has more parts to evaluate: lid, filter, spout, handle and balance. Heat behavior depends on wall thickness, shape and material, not the tool name alone.
Buying sequence
If you are new to gongfu tea, learn with a gaiwan or an inexpensive neutral brewer first. Then buy a Yixing teapot when you know your preferred tea, cup size and capacity. If you already brew regularly, start with one-person size or two-person size guides.
