Paozun Yixing Zisha Teapot – Red Jiangponi Clay, 140ml
This is a 140 ml paozun teapot in Red Jiangponi Clay, partially handmade, made in Dingshu, Yixing. Its Chinese name is 匏尊.
The clay. The warmer end of the jiangponi seam, with more red ore in the mix. Rounder and sweeter, with jiangponi's characteristic quick patina.
The form. The Paozun form (匏尊) dates to the Qing dynasty, Jiaqing–Daoguang era, attributed to Chen Mansheng and Yang Pengnian. A Mansheng form taken from the bottle gourd used as a ritual wine vessel. The body swells low and draws in toward a narrow neck. Asymmetric and organic within a plain-form vocabulary.
How it was made. Formed with the help of a mould for the body, with the spout, handle, lid and finishing worked by hand. A well-made half-handmade pot is a good pot; the difference is in labour, not in whether it brews well.
Size and tea. 140 ml serves two to three people from a single fill, which makes it the most generally useful size on a tea table. Best suited to black tea, ripe pu-erh and roasted oolong.
