Qinquan Yixing Zisha Teapot – Red Jiangponi Clay, 150ml
This is a 150 ml qinquan teapot in Red Jiangponi Clay, partially handmade, made in Dingshu, Yixing. Its Chinese name is 秦权.
The clay. The warmer end of the jiangponi seam, with more red ore in the mix. Rounder and sweeter, with jiangponi's characteristic quick patina.
The form. The Qinquan form (秦权) dates to the Qing dynasty. Modelled on a Qin-dynasty weight — the standard that came with the unification of measures. A weight is an instrument of fairness, and the form carries that idea. Solid and low-centred, with a high arched handle. Long favoured by literati for what it stands for.
How it was made. Formed with the help of a mould for the body, with the spout, handle, lid and finishing worked by hand. A well-made half-handmade pot is a good pot; the difference is in labour, not in whether it brews well.
Size and tea. 150 ml serves two to three people from a single fill, which makes it the most generally useful size on a tea table. Best suited to black tea, ripe pu-erh and roasted oolong.
This pot. Catalogue no. 056, 150 ml, US$101. Photographed individually — the images show the pot you receive.
