Shuiping Yixing Zisha Teapot – Hongpilong Clay, 120ml
This is a 120 ml shuiping teapot in Hongpilong Clay, hand-carved, made in Dingshu, Yixing. Its Chinese name is 水平.
The clay. An ore found in the surface layers rather than deep seams, firing to a warm brownish red with a fine, dense grain. Scarce, stable, and well regarded for the roundness it gives a brew.
The form. The Shuiping form (水平) dates to the late Ming to early Qing, attributed to the Hui Mengchen lineage. Built for Chaoshan gongfu tea. When the pot is bathed in hot water it floats level — hence the name. Light, small and one-handed. The standard fitting on a gongfu tray, and almost always made in zhuni.
How it was made. Decoration cut into the leather-hard clay by hand with a steel blade, in the Yixing engraving tradition that goes back to Chen Mansheng's collaborations with potters.
Size and tea. 120 ml is the classic gongfu size — comfortable for one drinker or two sharing small cups, and the volume most Chaoshan-style brewing was built around. Best suited to black tea, ripe pu-erh and roasted oolong.
