Handmade Hanwa Yixing Zisha Teapot – Jiangponi Clay, 140ml
This is a 140 ml hanwa teapot in Jiangponi Clay, fully handmade, made in Dingshu, Yixing. Its Chinese name is 景言汉瓦.
The clay. Mined from the slope between Huanglong and Qinglong mountains, where red and yellow ores meet — so the fired body carries both, warm and softly mottled. Fine-grained with a gentle sand feel. It polishes to an oily lustre faster than most clays and brews sweet and round.
The form. The Hanwa form (汉瓦) dates to the Qing dynasty. Modelled on Han-dynasty roof-end tiles, which were stamped with auspicious phrases such as 'may joy never end'. The body is cylindrical with flat shoulders and a straight wall. Firm, architectural lines. Takes a patina in a way that brings out an almost metallic depth.
How it was made. Built entirely by hand — the wall is beaten out from a slab and joined without a mould. Inside the body you can still read the tool marks and the joint line, which is how the method is verified.
Size and tea. 140 ml serves two to three people from a single fill, which makes it the most generally useful size on a tea table. Best suited to black tea, light oolong and ripe pu-erh.
This pot. Catalogue no. 108, 140 ml, US$85. Photographed individually — the images show the pot you receive.
