How to Clean a Yixing Teapot Without Soap

Unglazed Yixing zisha is valued because the clay surface is not covered by glaze. That same feature means cleaning should be simple and careful. For regular use, you do not need soap, detergent, vinegar, baking soda, perfume, oil or abrasive cleaners. Clean water, complete drying and consistent handling are enough.

A clean Yixing teapot routine should protect the unglazed clay surface rather than perfume or scrub it.

After each tea session

Empty the leaves while they are still soft. Rinse the inside of the pot with hot water and pour the water through the spout. This helps clear leaf fragments from the filter area. If leaves remain near the spout, use a soft stream of water or a clean bamboo tool. Do not scrape the interior with metal.

Rinse the lid and the outside of the pot as well. Tea can collect around the lid seat, spout base and handle. A soft, clean cloth can remove surface water from the outside, but avoid polishing compounds or scented cloths.

Why soap is usually avoided

Soap can leave scent or residue on unglazed clay. Even a small amount can affect later brewing because the pot is used with hot water. If a teapot has absorbed a strong smell, repeated hot-water rinsing and complete airing is safer than trying to fix it with more chemicals.

If a pot was exposed to mold, oil or unknown substances, treat it separately and do not use it for drinking until the problem is understood. This article covers normal tea-session cleaning, not restoration of damaged or contaminated ware.

Drying matters more than polishing

After rinsing, place the pot, lid and any removable pieces separately in a clean, ventilated place. Do not close the lid tightly while the pot is still damp. Trapped moisture can create odor. Let the body and lid dry completely before storage.

Store the teapot away from kitchen smells, incense, perfume and damp cabinets. Unglazed clay can pick up odors from the environment. A clean open shelf is often better than a sealed box if the pot is not fully dry.

Daily-use checklist

  • Empty leaves promptly after brewing.
  • Rinse with hot water only.
  • Clear the spout and filter gently.
  • Dry the body and lid separately.
  • Store away from strong odors.
