Palace Lantern Yixing Zisha Teapot – Yellow Jiangponi Clay, 120ml
This is a 120 ml palace lantern teapot in Yellow Jiangponi Clay, hand-carved, made in Dingshu, Yixing. Its Chinese name is 宫灯.
The clay. Jiangponi running toward yellow, closer in appearance to the duanni family while keeping the slope ore's soft grain. Gentle and easy-going; suits lighter teas.
The form. The Palace Lantern form (宫灯) dates to the early Qing. Modelled on a palace lantern — a rounded, upright body with a formal, festive bearing. Ceremonial without being heavy. Reads as celebratory on a tea table.
How it was made. Decoration cut into the leather-hard clay by hand with a steel blade, in the Yixing engraving tradition that goes back to Chen Mansheng's collaborations with potters.
Size and tea. 120 ml is the classic gongfu size — comfortable for one drinker or two sharing small cups, and the volume most Chaoshan-style brewing was built around. Best suited to green tea, light oolong and white tea.
