Artisan Design Yixing Zisha Teapot – Jiangponi Clay, 100ml
This is a 100 ml artisan design teapot in Jiangponi Clay, hand-carved, made in Dingshu, Yixing. Its Chinese name is 福禄景闻.
The clay. Mined from the slope between Huanglong and Qinglong mountains, where red and yellow ores meet — so the fired body carries both, warm and softly mottled. Fine-grained with a gentle sand feel. It polishes to an oily lustre faster than most clays and brews sweet and round.
The form. The subject here is gourd (fu-lu) — in Chinese decorative vocabulary, the same pun, written out: blessing and prosperity. An original design rather than a version of a canonical form. The maker sets the proportions, the line and the ornament. Judged on its own terms rather than against a classical template.
How it was made. Decoration cut into the leather-hard clay by hand with a steel blade, in the Yixing engraving tradition that goes back to Chen Mansheng's collaborations with potters.
Size and tea. 100 ml is the classic gongfu size — comfortable for one drinker or two sharing small cups, and the volume most Chaoshan-style brewing was built around. Best suited to black tea, light oolong and ripe pu-erh.
