Eggplant Form Yixing Zisha Teapot – Qing Jiangponi Clay, 90ml
Eggplant Form Yixing Zisha Teapot – Qing Jiangponi Clay, 90ml
This is a 90 ml eggplant form teapot in Qing Jiangponi Clay, gold-splashed, made in Dingshu, Yixing. Its Chinese name is 茄段.
The clay. The cooler end of the jiangponi seam, firing with a green-grey cast over the warm ground. Same approachable jiangponi character in a quieter colour.
The form. The subject here is aubergine — in Chinese decorative vocabulary, an everyday garden subject treated seriously. Naturalistic work — huaqi — takes its subject from the living world: gourds, pine, bamboo, lotus, fruit, animals. It descends directly from Gongchun's tree-burl pot, the founding object of the craft. Each piece is modelled and carved rather than turned, so no two come out the same.
How it was made. Sajin — flecks of gold scattered across the fired surface.
Size and tea. At 90 ml this is a solo pot. One person, short infusions, and the small volume means you can push a good leaf through eight or ten steeps without ever brewing more than you drink. Best suited to light oolong, green tea and white tea.
This pot. Catalogue no. 423, 90 ml, US$350. Photographed individually — the images show the pot you receive.
Made by 刘秀华. We buy directly from the workshop rather than through a wholesaler, so the attribution comes with the pot.
