Handmade Hanyun Yixing Zisha Teapot – Shihuang Clay, 220ml
This is a 220 ml zisha teapot in Shihuang Clay, fully handmade, made in Dingshu, Yixing. Its Chinese name is 汉云.
The clay. A naturally occurring, very high-iron yellow stone clay. Normally used to adjust the colour of zhuni and hongni; used on its own it is uncommon. Warm and bright in the hand, with a fine grain.
The form. This is the Hanyun form — 汉云 in Chinese. It is one of the many shapes carried in the Dingshu workshops outside the small set of canonical forms, and it is built by the same slab-and-beat method as the classics. We describe what we can verify: the ore, the method and the proportions.
How it was made. Built entirely by hand — the wall is beaten out from a slab and joined without a mould. Inside the body you can still read the tool marks and the joint line, which is how the method is verified.
Size and tea. 220 ml is a sharing pot. It suits a table of four or more, or a long single steep of something you want to drink slowly over an afternoon. Best suited to black tea and roasted oolong.
This pot. Catalogue no. 154, 220 ml, US$85. Photographed individually — the images show the pot you receive.
Made by 胡秀萍. We buy directly from the workshop rather than through a wholesaler, so the attribution comes with the pot.
